AV:L - The attacker-controlled data is an on-disk HFS+ catalog key, and the vulnerable comparison is reached through local syscalls (`stat`/`open`/`umount` → `path_lookupat` → `hfsplus_lookup`) on a mounted volume; there is no network or peer-supplied input path. Local is scored rather than Physical because the mount can be arranged locally via loop device and the trigger is an ordinary local path lookup.
AC:L - The `length` field of `struct hfsplus_unistr` is fully attacker-controlled in the crafted image and was used verbatim as the loop bound, so the out-of-bounds read fires deterministically on the first lookup — no race, no heap grooming, and no condition outside the attacker's control.
PR:L - Nothing in `hfsplus_lookup`, `hfs_brec_find`, or `hfsplus_strcasecmp` performs any capability check — an unprivileged user who can traverse an already-mounted HFS+ volume (as in the reporter's reproducer, which trips the bug from a plain `umount` path walk) triggers it, and on desktop/kiosk systems udisks2 automounts an attacker-supplied HFS+ volume without the attacker holding any privilege.
UI:N - In the automount scenario the volume is mounted by the system on device insertion with no victim action, and the attacker then triggers the read himself with an ordinary lookup on the mount point; choosing the higher-severity option where mount could otherwise be attributed to a victim.
S:U - The out-of-bounds read, the corrupted comparison result, and any resulting fault are all contained within the kernel's own security authority; no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary is crossed.
C:H - The read is not bounded to a few bytes — with `length` up to 0xFFFF the loop can walk ~130 KB past the 1036-byte `kmalloc-2k` key allocation into adjacent heap objects, and the resulting comparison outcomes steer the B-tree binary search, giving an attacker-observable oracle over that out-of-bounds kernel heap data.
I:N - `hfsplus_strcasecmp()` and `hfsplus_strcmp()` only dereference and compare; there is no out-of-bounds write, no type confusion, and no mechanism to modify kernel memory or hijack control flow.
A:H - The unbounded read can walk off the end of the mapped slab region and fault, producing a kernel oops in the namei path, and on KASAN/KFENCE or `panic_on_warn`/`panic_on_oops` kernels it is a guaranteed panic; it also leaves the B-tree search returning inconsistent results and the filesystem unusable."
