Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: HID: steam: Rearrange teardown sequence This fixes a narrow window during the teardown sequence where callbacks could still be scheduled during cleanup that would then have a dangling pointer to the now-freed steam struct. This also puts work canceling for rumble and mode switch in steam_unregister, as that shouldn't persist while the client hdev is open.
AV:L - `uhid_char_write()` accepts `UHID_CREATE2` with `BUS_USB` and Valve 0x28de:0x1205, causing `hid_add_device()` to bind `steam_probe()` and create the FF input device. The local actor races `evdev_write(EV_FF)` with `UHID_DESTROY`, whose `uhid_dev_destroy()` path reaches the patched `steam_remove()`.
AC:L - `steam_play_effect()` queues `coalesce_rumble_work` for HZ/20; repeated EV_FF writes can queue it after old `steam_remove()` cancels work but before `steam_input_unregister()` removes evdev. The attacker controls both EV_FF submission and UHID teardown, making the race repeatable.
PR:L - `uhid_char_write()`, `uhid_dev_create2()`, and `evdev_write()` contain no capability or namespace-admin check; access is governed by device-node DAC. An ordinary logged-in user granted `/dev/uhid` and the created `/dev/input/event*` therefore needs only low privileges.
UI:N - The attacking process creates the forged Steam Deck, uploads and plays rumble, and destroys its own UHID device; the delayed work then runs automatically. No victim must plug in hardware, open a file, or approve an action.
S:U - `steam_remove()` releases the devm-allocated `struct steam_device`, and the stale work item subsequently accesses memory within the same host kernel. No VM, IOMMU, or other security-authority boundary is crossed.
C:H - `steam_coalesce_rumble_cb()` reads freed `rumble_left/right`, then `steam_haptic_rumble()` follows the freed `steam->hdev` into HID report metadata. Reclaiming these slabs makes the UAF reads attacker-directed, supporting high confidentiality impact.
I:H - `steam_coalesce_rumble_cb()` locks the freed `report_mutex`, can requeue the embedded freed work item, and `steam_send_report()` dispatches through `steam->hdev->ll_driver->raw_request`. Controlled slab reuse therefore permits write and control-flow corruption.
A:H - The delayed `steam_coalesce_rumble_cb()` or `steam_haptic_rumble_cb()` can run after devres frees `steam`, so its mutex, workqueue, and HID dereferences can oops or panic the kernel. The actor can recreate the UHID device and repeat the teardown."
