Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: fix block_group_tree dirty_list corruption When the incompat flag EXTENT_TREE_V2 is set, we unconditionally add the block group tree to the switch_commits list before calling switch_commit_roots, as we do for the tree root and the chunk root. However, the block group tree uses normal root dirty tracking and in any transaction that does an allocation and dirties a block group, the block group root will already be linked to a list by the dirty_list field and this use of list_add_tail() is invalid and corrupts the prev/next members of block_group_root->dirty_list. This is apparent on a subsequent list_del on the prev if we enable CONFIG_DEBUG_LIST: [32.1571] ------------[ cut here ]------------ [32.1572] list_del corruption. next->prev should beffff958890202538, but was ffff9588992bd538.
AV:L - The flaw is in btrfs transaction commit (`btrfs_commit_transaction` → `switch_commit_roots`), reached only through local VFS/syscall paths (writes, `fsync`, `sync`/`btrfs_sync_fs`), not through a network protocol handler.
AC:L - On a filesystem with `EXTENT_TREE_V2`, any transaction that allocates and dirties the block-group root followed by a commit reliably hits the invalid second `list_add_tail`; the attacker controls writes and when commit runs without races or victim-specific timing.
PR:N - Exploitation needs only normal local access to perform allocating writes and trigger commit (e.g. `write`/`fallocate` plus `sync`/`fsync`); no root, `CAP_SYS_ADMIN`, or other elevated capability is required on an already-mounted affected btrfs volume.
UI:N - No victim interaction is required beyond the attacker (or any concurrent writer) performing filesystem I/O that dirties metadata and causes a transaction commit.
S:U - Impact stays within the kernel/filesystem security domain (metadata corruption, possible further kernel list misuse); it does not cross a VM, container, or IOMMU boundary.
C:H - The bug corrupts kernel `struct list_head` linkage in `switch_commits`/`dirty_cowonly_roots`; such heap/list corruption can be turned into arbitrary kernel reads even though the primary symptom is filesystem failure.
I:H - List corruption can mis-route commit processing and, as demonstrated, leads to btrfs transaction abort, “filesystem corrupted” errors, and forced read-only state—arbitrary integrity loss on the affected volume.
A:H - Successful trigger forces the btrfs filesystem into a corrupted, read-only state and can emit kernel warnings during `list_del`, denying normal read/write availability for all users of that filesystem."
