Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: HID: core: Mitigate potential OOB by removing bogus memset() The memset() in hid_report_raw_event() has the good intention of clearing out bogus data by zeroing the area from the end of the incoming data string to the assumed end of the buffer. However, as we have previously seen, doing so can easily result in OOB reads and writes in the subsequent thread of execution. The current suggestion from one of the HID maintainers is to remove the memset() and simply return if the incoming event buffer size is not large enough to fill the associated report. Suggested-by Benjamin Tissoires <bentiss@kernel.org> [bentiss: changed the return value]

Kernel memory corruption is plausibly usable to obtain sensitive kernel memory disclosure.\\nI:H - The removed memset performed an out-of-bounds zero write past short report buffers for some call paths, including small stack/static translated reports. Kernel OOB writes are memory corruption and are defensibly scored as high integrity impact.\\nA:H - The OOB write/read can corrupt kernel memory or fault during HID event processing, leading to an oops or system crash. The triggering report can be resent by the attacker-controlled HID peer.\"}]}], \"affected\": [{\"repo\": \"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git\", \"vendor\": \"Linux\", \"product\": \"Linux\", \"versions\": [{\"status\": \"affected\", \"version\": \"cd6104572bca9e4afe0dcdb8ecd65ef90b01297b\", \"lessThan\": \"218b93b7e284de1aa40a53f8f130f84f7da38858\", \"versionType\": \"git\"}, {\"status\": \"affected\", \"version\": \"cd6104572bca9e4afe0dcdb8ecd65ef90b01297b\", \"lessThan\": \"b37e6019fe420335d884e30535549a25f084e00d\", \"versionType\": \"git\"}, {\"status\": \"affected\", \"version\": \"cd6104572bca9e4afe0dcdb8ecd65ef90b01297b\", \"lessThan\": \"8f71034649738fdeb6859b8d6cddf132024fac06\", \"versionType\": \"git\"}, {\"status\": \"affected\", \"version\": \"cd6104572bca9e4afe0dcdb8ecd65ef90b01297b\", \"lessThan\": \"bd6e1d0230cca9575f5d118148f51e2a56b5373f\", \"versionType\": \"git\"}, {\"status\": \"affected\", \"version\": \"cd6104572bca9e4afe0dcdb8ecd65ef90b01297b\", \"lessThan\": \"0a3fe972a7cb1404f693d6f1711f32bc1d244b1c\", \"versionType\": \"git\"}], \"programFiles\": [\"drivers/hid/hid-core.c\"], \"defaultStatus\": \"unaffected\"}, {\"repo\": \"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git\", \"vendor\": \"Linux\", \"product\": \"Linux\", \"versions\": [{\"status\": \"affected\", \"version\": \"2.6.15\"}, {\"status\": \"unaffected\", \"version\": \"0\", \"lessThan\": \"2.6.15\", \"versionType\": \"semver\"}, {\"status\": \"unaffected\", \"version\": \"6.6.160\", \"versionType\": \"semver\", \"lessThanOrEqual\": \"6.6.*\"}, {\"status\": \"unaffected\", \"version\": \"6.12.114\", \"versionType\": \"semver\", \"lessThanOrEqual\": \"6.12.*\"}, {\"status\": \"unaffected\", \"version\": \"6.18.22\", \"versionType\": \"semver\", \"lessThanOrEqual\": \"6.18.*\"}, {\"status\": \"unaffected\", \"version\": \"6.19.12\", \"versionType\": \"semver\", \"lessThanOrEqual\": \"6.19.*\"}, {\"status\": \"unaffected\", \"version\": \"7.0\", \"versionType\": \"original_commit_for_fix\", \"lessThanOrEqual\": \"*\"}], \"programFiles\": [\"drivers/hid/hid-core.c\"], \"defaultStatus\": \"affected\"}], \"references\": [{\"url\": \"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/218b93b7e284de1aa40a53f8f130f84f7da38858\"}, {\"url\": \"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/b37e6019fe420335d884e30535549a25f084e00d\"}, {\"url\": \"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/8f71034649738fdeb6859b8d6cddf132024fac06\"}, {\"url\": \"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/bd6e1d0230cca9575f5d118148f51e2a56b5373f\"}, {\"url\": \"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/0a3fe972a7cb1404f693d6f1711f32bc1d244b1c\"}], \"x_generator\": {\"engine\": \"bippy-1.2.0\"}, \"descriptions\": [{\"lang\": \"en\", \"value\": \"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\\n\\nHID: core: Mitigate potential OOB by removing bogus memset()\\n\\nThe memset() in hid_report_raw_event() has the good intention of\\nclearing out bogus data by zeroing the area from the end of the incoming\\ndata string to the assumed end of the buffer.
