Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cachefiles: wait for ondemand_object_worker to finish when dropping object When queuing ondemand_object_worker() to re-open the object, cachefiles_object is not pinned. The cachefiles_object may be freed when the pending read request is completed intentionally and the related erofs is umounted. If ondemand_object_worker() runs after the object is freed, it will incur use-after-free problem as shown below. process A processs B process C process D cachefiles_ondemand_send_req() // send a read req X // wait for its completion // close ondemand fd cachefiles_ondemand_fd_release() // set object as CLOSE cachefiles_ondemand_daemon_read() // set object as REOPENING queue_work(fscache_wq, &info->ondemand_work) // close /dev/cachefiles cachefiles_daemon_release cachefiles_flush_reqs complete(&req->done) // read req X is completed // umount the erofs fs cachefiles_put_object() // object will be freed cachefiles_ondemand_deinit_obj_info() kmem_cache_free(object) // both info and object are freed ondemand_object_worker() When dropping an object, it is no longer necessary to reopen the object, so use cancel_work_sync() to cancel or wait for ondemand_object_worker() to finish.

No remote peer data reaches `ondemand_object_worker()`.
AC:L - The attacker supplies the decisive side of the race by keeping a continuous flood of uncached reads in flight on the fscache-backed mount, so a request is essentially always pending on a CLOSE-state object when a drop occurs, and can also saturate `fscache_wq` to widen the window before `ondemand_object_worker()` executes; heap grooming of kmalloc-64 to reclaim the freed `cachefiles_ondemand_info` is likewise fully attacker-controlled and retryable.
PR:L - Reaching `cachefiles_ondemand_read()` requires only an unprivileged local user with read access to an erofs-over-fscache mount — `cachefiles_prepare_read()` performs no capability check — and the attacker never needs the daemon's CAP_SYS_ADMIN, which belongs to the victim side of the race.
UI:N - No deliberate victim action is needed; the attacker's own file reads create the pending requests, and object withdrawal is routine automated lifecycle activity (container teardown/umount, daemon restart or crash, cache unbind) rather than a user being tricked into anything.
S:U - The corruption and all its consequences stay within the kernel's own security authority; no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary is crossed.
C:H - The slab-use-after-free reads `info->object` out of a reclaimed kmalloc-64 allocation and chains dereferences through `object->cookie` and `object->volume`, and `cachefiles_ondemand_init_open_req()` `memcpy()`s from those attacker-redirected pointers into a message that `cachefiles_ondemand_daemon_read()` copies to userspace — an arbitrary kernel-memory read primitive.
I:H - The freed-object path performs attacker-addressable writes: `cachefiles_ondemand_set_object_close()` stores to `object->ondemand->state`, `wake_up_all(&cache->daemon_pollwq)` does spinlock and list manipulation on a controlled address, and `xas_store()` writes into a forged xarray — sufficient to build a write primitive and escalate privileges.
A:H - Even without successful heap grooming, `ondemand_object_worker()` dereferences garbage from freed memory in workqueue context (and a still-queued work item leaves the workqueue list pointing into freed slab), producing the slab-use-after-free oops/panic described in the commit."
